Job board, match scores and My applications, explained

How the Whali job board ranks early-career roles against your profile with a match score, what a card shows, how the profile panel and saved targets work, and how to explore, follow companies, write documents and track applications.

Last updated 7 September 2026

The Job board opens on For you: early-career roles pulled hourly from company career sites and ranked against your profile, each with a match score, the reasons behind it and the gaps to close. Explore holds the full board by company or role with every filter, and My applications tracks each role you save from first bookmark to offer.

What does the match score mean?

Every card carries a score out of 100 and a label: Strong (85 and above), Good (70 to 84), Stretch (55 to 69) or Low. It is built from six things Whali can check against the advert: your skills, where you are in your studies and the programme, location, sector, the degree asked for, and your right to work. On a computer, point at the score to see the reasons and gaps behind it as short tags without the card changing size; press Expand to open the card with every reason and gap written out and each part's points on a bar, above the advert's highlights. On a phone the tags sit under the score.

  1. Add your CV or connect LinkedIn on About you. Without one, cards show no number and ask for it instead.
  2. Set your targets in the panel on the right: programmes, up to three locations, sectors, workplace, start year and salary floor.
  3. Answer the work rights question in the same panel. A role that cannot sponsor you is capped and says so, with a link to roles that do.
  4. Save, hide and apply as you go. Roles at employers you saved rank higher; employers you keep hiding sink.
SignalWhat Whali readsWeight
SkillsThe advert's key skills against the skills on your profile (generic ones like communication are ignored)30
Stage and programmeYour graduation year and target programmes against the advert's programme20
LocationYour target cities and countries, with remote roles counting everywhere15
SectorThe employer's industry against your target sectors15
DegreeThe degree the advert asks for against yours10
Work rightsWhether you can work there, or the advert sponsors visas10

The score is honest about missing information: if a part of your profile is unknown it is left out and the score can never read Strong.

What is on a job card?

Each card shows the employer with its size and headquarters, when the role went live, the programme, the closing date, the Glassdoor rating where we hold one, whether visas are sponsored, and whether the advert names a recruiter. A six-cell strip covers location, type, start, salary, degree and sponsorship. The match panel sits on the right.

  1. Press Details to read the responsibilities, requirements and key skills without leaving the feed.
  2. Save with the heart, or Hide to remove a role from For you (Undo appears at the top of the feed).
  3. Tailor CV and Cover letter open the role and start writing that document straight away (the price is on the button; a document that already exists opens instead). Network opens the role with the people behind it at the top of the page. Ask Whali opens the role.
  4. Apply opens the employer's own application page in a new tab, and Whali asks afterwards whether you applied.

What can Ask Whali do on a job page?

Ask Whali is the coach on every job page. It reads the advert, the employer, your match breakdown and your profile, then answers questions, explains the score, and offers the work that costs credits before doing any of it. It never applies or sends anything for you: Apply is your button, and email drafts wait in your Inbox.

  1. Type a question or tap a chip: Why this score, Tailor my CV, Answer application questions, Who should I contact, Prepare me for the interview, I applied.
  2. When Whali proposes paid work it shows a card with the price and your balance. Tap Yes to run it, or Not now. Typing yes does not accept an offer.
  3. Paste application form questions and Whali extracts them; accepting writes one answer each from your profile, with a copy button on every answer.
  4. Tell Whali you applied, heard back or have an interview and it moves the status, keeps a next step with its date, and notes anything you want remembered in the Your application card.
Ask Whali workCredits

Tailored CV or cover letter (the same documents as the panel below)5 each
Answers to one set of up to eight application questions3

The conversation is kept with the application, so it is there when you come back on any device. It is free to use, with a daily allowance of turns.

How does the profile panel work?

The panel on the right of For you is your corner of the board. The small handle on its left edge folds it away to a thin strip at the side of the screen (press it, or drag it sideways) and brings it back; Whali remembers your choice on that browser. It opens with your name, then two source pills. Until you connect them they read Add LinkedIn for smarter job matches and Add your CV for match scores, each opening the right step on About you (the small cross hides a pill for a month). Once connected, the LinkedIn pill shows your account with Open and Update, and the CV pill shows the file on record with View (opens it in Whali) and Replace. Both lead to About you and back. Below them, Profile readiness is one score for how much Whali knows about you, with the single most useful next step on top and the rest folded underneath. Each step says what it unlocks: match scores need a CV or LinkedIn, messaging the people behind a role (Network) needs a connected mailbox, tailored documents need a parsed profile.

  1. Add your CV or connect LinkedIn (25 points) to unlock match scores.
  2. Set your targets (20) so roles rank by programme, place and sector.
  3. Connect your mailbox (15) to message recruiters from Whali.
  4. Add a second source, your work rights, a quantified achievement, and an Email style to sharpen everything else.

Your targets, further down the panel, are the saved filters behind the feed. Until you save them the rows show what Whali derived from your profile, marked From your profile, and the bar above the feed shows the same place, programmes and sectors as green pills with a note that they are suggested; pressing a pill or Edit targets opens the editor pre-filled with those values so one Save confirms them. The white toggles beside them narrow the feed for the moment: New today, Strong and good only, Closing this week, and Sponsors visas.

How do I search for roles on Explore?

Explore is the full board. The Companies and Roles toggle sits first in the control row, followed by Select scheme, a sector menu and a location box. Type a company name to filter the board as you go, or press Enter to search roles across every employer in our database. Every role card on Explore carries the same match panel as For you.

  1. Open Job board in the sidebar and choose the Explore tab.
  2. Choose Companies (firms that are hiring now) or Roles (the flat list of adverts).
  3. Press Select scheme and tick Summer internships, Spring weeks, Off-cycle, Placements or Graduate. Tick more than one to widen the net.
  4. Set a sector and a location (city or country).
  5. Type in the search box and press Enter to search roles.

Use More filters in the results header for workplace, date posted, minimum salary, education, function, a Sponsors visa toggle, up to five skills, and a company tick list with role counts. Your filters live in the page address, so a search you like can be bookmarked or sent to a friend, and For you offers a Continue your last search shortcut back to it.

Sort optionWhat it does

How do I follow companies and get alerts?

Following a company keeps it in one place and powers alerts. Press Follow on any company row or company page, then sort Explore by Following to see just those firms. Companies you follow also appears on My applications. Job alerts, on the Max plan, email you new roles.

  1. Press Follow on the companies you are targeting.
  2. Open Job alerts at the top of the Job board.
  3. Pick Companies you follow, or Custom search to save the filters you are looking at.
  4. Choose Daily, Weekly or Monthly. The editor previews how many roles matched in the last seven days.
  5. Press Save alert. Every alert can be switched off from the same panel, and each email carries an unsubscribe link.

Shortcut: after any filtered search on Explore, the Alert me about roles like this chip builds an alert from exactly what is on screen.

How do I track my applications?

Save any role with the heart on a job card, or the Save job button on the job page. Saved roles collect on My applications, ordered by deadline so the ones closing soonest sit at the top, each with its current match. Each row carries a status you can move from Saved to Applied, Contacted, Interview, Offer or Closed.

  1. Save roles while you browse.
  2. Open Job board in the sidebar and choose the My applications tab.
  3. Move the status dropdown as you progress. If you opened an advert's apply page, an Applied? chip offers to mark it in one tap. Closed keeps the record for a rejection or withdrawal and moves it to the bottom.
  4. Remove anything you have ruled out with the X on the right.

Adverts that come down get an Expired tag and stay in your list, so your record of what you applied for stays intact.

Can Whali write my application documents?

On any job page, the Application documents panel offers a Tailored CV and a Cover letter, each generated from the profile Whali already holds and the wording of that specific advert. Both cost credits to generate (and to regenerate with AI); editing the text in place and downloading the PDF again are free.

  1. Add your CV or connect LinkedIn once. If you have not yet, pressing Tailor CV, Cover letter or Research opens a small window on the board that takes the file (PDF, Word or an image) or a LinkedIn URL, saves it to the same profile as About you, and then carries on with what you asked for.
  2. Press Tailor CV or Cover letter on a card and the role opens with the document already being written, or open a job and press Generate on the panel.
  3. Edit the text in place, download the PDF, or save it to your documents library so you can attach it to outreach.
  4. Press Improve to rewrite a document for the same price as a fresh one: answer the one to three questions Whali asks about the parts of your profile the document leans on (the part of a project that was really yours, the number behind a result), or type what you want changed. Your answers are kept with your profile and used in every later letter, so you are never asked twice; you can read and delete them on About you. When the sector screens for a fact you have not added (a predicted grade, a driving licence, clearance eligibility, a portfolio link), the same window asks for it and saves it to About you.

Every document is written in one of eight industry styles (finance and consulting, professional services, technology, engineering and industry, science and health, marketing and creative, retail and operations, agriculture), each with its own layout, section order and tone, and in the conventions of the advert's country, so a US summer analyst letter signs off Sincerely and a UK one Yours faithfully. The style is shown under the document with a free switch to another layout.

Saved copies are named automatically from the name on the document, its type and the role, for example Alex Chen CV - Software Intern (Acme). Each document keeps one copy in your library. If you edit or regenerate the document and save it again, or send outreach for that job, Whali refreshes that copy in place: the PDF and its file name update to match the current version, while the label you see in Whali stays exactly as you set it.

How do I reach the people behind a role?

Every job page carries a People at panel listing real people at the hiring company, from recruiters to the team you would join. Browsing and filtering are free. Select the people you want, press Research, and they land on My Leads exactly like leads from Connect.

  1. Open a job (Network on a card opens the role with this panel at the top of the page, sized to your screen, with the list scrolling inside it). Filter by seniority, location or name. Browsing needs no profile; Research asks for your CV first when none is on file.
  2. Tick the people you want to contact. Some adverts also name the hiring manager, email included, at the top of the list.
  3. Press Research. Each person costs the usual research credits, and you land on My Leads to watch the research complete.
  4. Generate and send emails from My Leads as normal. Whali writes them around the role you are applying for, attaches your tailored CV when you have made one, and marks the application Contacted once an email goes out.

Costs are listed in Credits and billing. Match scores, readiness and hiding roles never cost credits.

FAQ

What does the match score mean?
It is a 0 to 100 estimate of how well an advert fits you, built from six checks: your skills against the key skills in the advert, your stage and the programme, location, sector, the degree asked for, and your right to work. Strong is 85 and above, Good 70 to 84, Stretch 55 to 69. Why this score lists each part.
Why does a role show no score?
Whali will not put a number on a role without a skills source, so cards say Add your CV to see your match until you upload a CV or connect LinkedIn on About you. Once one is in, every card scores at once. If a part of your profile is still unknown, that part is left out and the score cannot read Strong.
Does Ask Whali apply for me?
No. Ask Whali explains the score, tailors your CV and cover letter, drafts answers to application questions and emails to recruiters, and keeps your tracker up to date, but every application goes through the employer page under your own name, and every draft waits in your Inbox until you send it.
How often do new jobs appear?
The board syncs with company career sites every hour, so most adverts show up within an hour of going live. Anything posted today carries a New badge, and the results header shows a count of what landed today.
Do job alerts cost credits?
No, alerts never use credits. Setting one up needs the Max plan, and you can pause or delete any alert at any time, including from the unsubscribe link in the email itself.
What does the amber Closes in badge mean?
It counts down to the deadline stated on the advert and appears when a role closes within a week. My applications puts these at the top of your list so nothing slips past.
A company I want is not showing any roles. Why?
Either it has nothing live right now, or it is tracked through its careers site rather than a feed we can read. Follow the company and you will hear about new roles as soon as they appear.
Why did the name of my saved CV change?
Documents saved from a job page are named automatically from the name on the document, its type and the role, for example Alex Chen CV - Software Intern (Acme). Editing or regenerating the document and saving it again, or sending outreach for that job, refreshes the saved copy and its file name so the attachment always matches the latest version. A label you set yourself in Documents is never overwritten.
